Brigitte Bierlein is the new President of the Austrian Constitutional Court

23.02.2018

Three Members of the Court had reached retirement age at the end of 2017. That is why these vacancies had to be refilled.

On 23 February 2018 Brigitte Bierlein was sworn in as President of the Austrian Constitutional Court. Bierlein who has already served as Vice-President of the Court since 2003 has subsequently acted as Interim Head since 1 January 2018.

Professor Christoph Grabenwarter having thirteen years of experience as a Judge of the Court has been appointed as the new Vice-President. Both, Bierlein and Grabenwarter, have been nominated upon a proposal of the Federal Government.

It was the retirement of President Gerhart Holzinger and the two long-term Judges Eleonore Berchtold-Ostermann and Rudolf Müller as of 31 December 2017 which lead to these changes.

Furthermore, the former Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Justice Prof. Wolfgang Brandstetter has been appointed as Judge of the Constitutional Court on another proposal of the Federal Government.

There are still two more positions vacant. The successors have to be nominated by both Chambers of Parliament.
